Leo Mayfield was born in Wayne, Oklahoma and attended primary and secondary school in Byars, Oklahoma. In 1940, Leo began his over 50 years of service to Putnam City Schools by teaching history, English, and journalism. He soon became the junior high school principal, but was called to war in 1942 where he served in the US Coast Guard. 

When the war ended in 1945, Leo returned to Putnam City to teach and coach, becoming principal of the Putnam City High School in 1947 where he remained until 1964. 

In 1964, Leo was named superintendent of Putnam City Schools. He served as superintendent for 14 years and was instrumental in seeing the District through a time a rapid growth.
