Welcome Back!

The calendar says it’s almost time for school to start, but I can assure you for so many of Putnam City’s teachers, the year has already started. July is typically a slower month around here and then August 1st hits and it all happens at once. I overheard someone say it was like going from 0 to 60 in a few seconds, and I couldn’t agree more. Everything starts happening! Teachers start coming to trainings, rebuilding their classrooms, and students buy new school supplies and clothing. And I love it.

There is always plenty to do at the foundation (and I’m looking for some volunteers who wouldn’t mind doing data entry, but I digress), but in the summer it’s done mostly in isolation. We use the time to plan for the following year, evaluate the last year, and report all those findings to our donors and friends.

But then school starts, and we are in the thick of it. The New Teacher Academy is going on this week, and we’ve had a booth at it just to introduce ourselves to the newest Putnam City employees. This year, we are giving away a brand new binder to as many new teachers as we can just to welcome them to the district. It isn’t a cash bonus like we would all like it to be, but maybe a little something to show these new people how much we appreciate their joining us in our efforts to produce better citizens.

We also want our new people to learn all the foundation does to support them, their schools, and the district as a whole. Maybe they’ll join us in the Friends of the Foundation, gaining a chance to win a set of Beats headphones by Dr. Dre! Not to brag, but teachers and staff in Putnam City now give over $25,000 a year to the foundation, making them one of our largest donors! That’s pretty impressive, if I do say so myself.

So welcome back to all those new and returning teachers. Thank each of you for being a part of these children’s lives. Remember that the foundation believes in you and wants to help you alleviate the pressure on your wallet whenever we can!
