Author Matt de la Pena Visits Putnam City High Schools

Recently, the Putnam City District High Schools welcomed Matt de la Pena, an author who started life in a “have-not” area on the coast of California as a basketball player that nobody really noticed. After winning a basketball scholarship to the University of the Pacific, Matt discovered his real passion-writing. And writing is what he did! His first novel, Ball Don’t Lie, was named a “Best Book for Young Adults” by the American Library Association.
As one Putnam City student wrote, “His life story relates to mine. He didn’t like to read but now he is an author and that’s how I am. The advice and feeling of caring he shared with us made me feel better and made me more insightful into my poetry and story writing. His visit inspired me to make something of my writing, making me proud to call myself a poet.”
Ellen DeFehr, Library Media Specialist at Putnam City High School wrote, “I saw students risk being made fun of by their peers to ask questions about their own writing experiences. I saw hope and confidence in the face of a non-reader who read one of Matt’s books and came back to ask for another.
