PC North teacher Jennifer Seal gets state history honors

From an article in the October 16, 2010, issue of The Oklahoman:

Putnam City North High School teacher Jennifer Seal has been named the 2010 Oklahoma Preserve America History Teacher of the Year.

The award honors one American history teacher from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Department of Defense schools and U.S. territories.

"Ms. Seal is an excellent educator who sets high expectations and challenges students with rigorous content," said Pam King, an assistant principal at Putnam City North.  "She is engaging and creative, and students leave her classroom both exhilarated and full of the knowledge required to be well-rounded citizens."

Selection is based on several criteria, including at least three years of classroom experience teaching American history; creativity and imagination in the classroom that addresses literacy and content beyond state standards; close attention to primary documents; and evidence of thoughtful assessment of student achievement.

Seal will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in the running for the national Preserve America History Teacher of the Year Award this fall.  Putnam City North's library also will receive a core archive of history books and educational materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Seal began her teaching career at Putnam City North in 1999.  She teaches Advanced Placement U.S. history, U.S. history, world history and government.  She has a master's degree in U.S. history from University of Central Oklahoma and a bachelor's degree in history from Oklahoma City University.
